Clove
Clove is a camouflaged app that looks like a regular task tracker application but it is created to assist victims of domestic violence. Behind its everyday interface, it offers a secure and private area where victims can report, access information, and connect with the authorities without any suspicion.
Challenges
Though it has been a ground-breaking move, Clove was developed with a number of challenges that were critical. The most difficult part was maintaining the concealment and discretion, in other words developing an application that can pass as an ordinary productivity tool and yet contain certain features that would allow the users to stay safe. Any weakness that is visible in the design may compromise the safety of the users.
Meanwhile, the safe storage and transmission of data became challenging, as the sensitive reports and notifications had to be encrypted with airtight passes and their access had to be severely limited.
The other challenge was the design of real time emergency triggers without destroying the disguise. It also needed background processes, which could present SOS alerts in real-time, but with minimal device footprint and with an invisible footprint. Equally, this meant that it had to integrate with trusted support networks, including NGOs, hotlines and local authorities using robust and reliable APIs to provide location-based help in real time.
And, finally, scalability and flexibility were needed. The platform should be friendly to the different regions, languages and legal systems yet remain inconspicuous. These issues were managed with the help of dual-interface design, end-to-end encryption, modular architecture, and secure third-party integrations. Together they have turned Clove into a trustworthy, secretive and proactive safety layer.
